Airports are busy local hubs that attract large numbers of people every day. Most of the time, traffic flows, passenger processing is routine, aircraft come and go, and the community is well served. However, the unexpected does happen at airports, and airport operators, tenants, local community, federal and state government agencies, and other key personnel necessary for airport emergency response must be prepared at all times to work together to mitigate any type of threatening situation that occurs.

Member Spotlight

Joined AAAE: 1998

Industry Mentor:  Dutch Bertholf, former Phoenix Aviation Director and AAAE Chair and Carl Newman with Jackson Municipal Airport Authority and current AAAE chair.

What has being involved in AAAE meant to your career?  I joined AAAE as an intern at the beginning of my airport career. I was immediately immersed in the AAAE culture as PHX prepared to host the 1999 Annual Conference. The professional development, networking, and learning opportunities are unparalleled in the industry, and I have made innumerable professional connections and many lifelong friends through AAAE. Earning my accreditation in 2007 was the highlight of my career until I was given the privilege to serve on the Board of Examiners, which has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life!

Favorite Airport Code:  PHX

What's in your carry on? Laptop and headphones. I get some of my best work done on airplanes because there are no emails or phone calls.
