One of the many consequences of the Haiti Earthquake disaster is the sad fact that many employees of the airport have also suffered the loss of their homes and possessions. The Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA) and American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE), in response to calls from the airport community, have established a humanitarian relief fund to aid airport employees of the governing bodies that operate airports in the region impacted by the Haitian earthquake.
ACI-NA Chair G. Hardy Acree and AAAE Chair John Duval, A.A.E said that, just as the airport community came together to help our colleagues in the U.S. following the Hurricane Katrina disaster, we need to extend our generosity to our colleagues in Haiti in their time of need.
Duval and Acree stressed that 100% of the funds collected by the associations from ACI-NA/AAAE members and corporate/associate members will be designated for distribution to airport employees for the purposes of humanitarian relief, such as assistance with temporary housing, food, clothing, transportation, etc.
The two groups have set up a 501(c) 3 account to accept the funds, making all donations 100% tax deductible. Cash charitable contributions made by check, credit card, or debit card, between January 11, 2010 and March 1, 2010 to charities providing earthquake relief in Haiti can be claimed on 2009 tax returns. AAAE and ACI-NA will jointly administer collection of the funds. Funds will be disbursed to individual employees following guidelines to be developed jointly and with the ACI Latin American Caribbean regional office in Miami and with the FAA. In the event that a secure disbursement mechanism cannot be devised in the chaotic environment currently prevailing in Haiti, the ACI-NA and AAAE boards will jointly designate an alternate charity working in Haiti to receive the funds.
Contributors can make their donations by credit card only from AAAE's VeriSign certified secure web site.
We will keep you posted if other airports request this humanitarian aid.
If you have questions or need further information, please contact Chip Barclay or Spencer Dickerson at the AAAE office (phone 703/824-0504; sdickerson@aaae.org; cbarclay@aaae.org) or Greg Principato or Dick Marchi at the ACI-NA office (phone 202/293-8500; rmarchi@aci-na.org; gprincipato@aci-na.org).
Thank you in advance for your caring and generosity in this time of great, great need.
