This session focuses on the underlying theory – and the evolution of that theory over time – of safety in the workplace. Without understanding safety’s roots and its connection to many other systems, SMS is difficult to grasp. To avoid simply re-naming old safety thinking, we’ll spend time together examining how shifting our thinking on safety in systems can make our airports more efficient, increase workforce engagement, and create safer and more resilient airfields.

In this module, we will focus on integrating safety into the many other systems already in place at out airport. To be effective, any system must be mindful of the cultures we operate within, and so this session includes practical tools for understanding and positively influencing organizational culture. We’ll also introduce the connection between safety and quality efforts, as well as set the stage for understanding the components of an effective SMS.

In our third session, the focus is on a thorough understanding of the core components of an effective SMS, starting with Safety Policy and Objectives and Safety Risk Management. Together, we will navigate common pitfalls and explore practical examples and organizational success stories. At the end of this module, participants will have practiced understanding, assessing, and prioritizing risk using examples from their daily work.

We continue exploring the components of SMS in this session, moving on to Safety Assurance and evaluating safety performance. We will also work collaboratively to practice data presentation as well as the safety communication that is foundational to Safety Promotion. We conclude session four with discussion of safety training and supporting an enduring culture of safety at our airport.

Our final session is all about application of what we’ve learned together so far, and in it, we answer the question, “Now what?” Not only will participants feel comfortable creating a detailed implementation plan for SMS, they will come away with cautionary tales in the form of a sample SMS fraught with common errors. We’ll also devote time in this session to review key concepts, ensure that the links between them are well-understood, and gain confidence for those taking the ACE-SMS certification exam.
