General Session II - Emerging Environmental Issues

Airports face several emerging environmental challenges. Some of them that will be discussed during this session include: • The NEPA process has been revised to include several provisions effecting how NEPA efforts will be conducted on future projects. One topic of many, revolve around Section 163 and the new NPRM regarding CEQ’s changes to NEPA regulations. • Recent development in municipal disclosure documents (regarding impacts of climate change and the reasons such disclosure) will be presented. • The latest information on PFAS will be discussed, and how Airport’s ARFF operations have been required to train with and use an AFFF that contains chemicals likely to be deemed hazardous in the near future. • The climate and resulting weather patterns are expected to change resulting in adverse impacts to nearly all airports’ infrastructure and operations. During this session, the speakers will discuss the expected challenges focusing on potential design, operational, legal, and financial implications for airports.

Risk Management-- Avoiding, Reducing or Mitigating both Airside and Landside Safety and Liability Risks

This discussion will explore risk management programs and best-practices encompassing both regulatory and non-regulatory practices. This discussion will include airside and landside safety and liability risks, and techniques to avoid, reduce or mitigate risk exposure on your airport. Emphasis will be placed on both proactive/preventive practices, as well as reactive practices; i.e. to the greatest extent practical, what can we do to avoid risk exposure, but when accidents/incidents occur, how can we respond to protect ourselves. We will also discuss some of the possible COVID-19 related risk management implications on our industry.

Situational Awareness and Risk Mitigation in Airport Cybersecurity

Individual airports are part of critical infrastructure essential to our nation’s defense. With a complex mix of federal agencies, private operators, tenants and transient passengers, protection of your airport from cybersecurity attacks in an ever-increasingly connected environment can be a daunting task. Malicious actors can launch cybersecurity attacks that can cause everything from public embarrassment and erosion of community confidence, to compromised safety and the potential for catastrophic loss of life. This panel will dive into some of the vulnerabilities prevalent at civil airports, share some simple remedies, and explore opportunities to reduce exposure for the airport and the varied stakeholders that operate from your facility.
